Time to Stop Trident

We, the undersigned, call on the government to

• Cancel the replacement of Trident, Britain's nuclear weapons system
• Support the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons

Trident is militarily irrelevant in dealing with the security problems we face today; in fact nuclear weapons are detrimental to British and global security and are likely to be rendered obsolete by technological advances.

Replacing Trident is hugely expensive, especially when considered in the context of cuts in other areas of government spending.

The use of nuclear weapons would be illegal under international law, and replacing the current system would be in breach of Britain's international treaty obligations. Replacing Trident is unpopular internationally, with most of the world's countries supporting a new treaty which outlaws nuclear weapons - the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons.
