Ask the Foreign Secretary to act on nuclear arms control

New START is the last remaining agreement capping US and Russian nuclear weapons. Letting it collapse would make an already unstable world even more dangerous.

At a time when nuclear risks are higher than at any point since the Cold War, the UK should be using its diplomatic influence to push for restraint and dialogue. As a nuclear-armed state, Britain also has clear obligations under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty to pursue disarmament in good faith.

We’re asking CND members and supporters to write to the Foreign Secretary and urge the government to press for the renewal of New START, and to show real leadership on nuclear disarmament.

Dear Foreign Secretary,I am writing to ask the UK government to play a more active role in supporting the renewal of the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (New START), which is due to expire on 5 February 2026.New START is the last remaining agreement limiting the size of the US and Russian nuclear arsenals. If it is allowed to lapse, it would be a major setback for global arms control and would make an already dangerous international situation even more unstable. At a minimum, it provides some restraint and predictability between the two largest nuclear powers, and that matters for everyone’s security.The treaty places clear limits on deployed nuclear warheads and the missiles and bombers that carry them. It also includes inspections and data-sharing, which help reduce mistrust and the risk of miscalculation. Since it came into force, New START has led to real reductions, with both the US and Russia dismantling thousands of nuclear weapons and delivery systems.The UK has previously welcomed New START and its extension, recognising its importance for transparency and stability. At a time when the risk of nuclear weapons being used is widely said to be higher than at any point since the Cold War, the UK should be doing everything it can to support measures that reduce tensions rather than add to them.As a nuclear-armed state, the UK has a responsibility under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty to pursue nuclear disarmament in good faith. Supporting the renewal of New START would be a practical and meaningful way to demonstrate that commitment.I urge the government to use its diplomatic influence to press the United States to rejoin and renew the New START Treaty, and to work with international partners to prevent the complete collapse of nuclear arms control.I would welcome a response outlining how the UK intends to uphold its NPT commitments and contribute to reducing nuclear risks in the current international climate.
