We, the undersigned, call on the government to

• recognise that the decision to increase the number of nuclear warheads is illegal and contravenes Britain’s obligation under the nuclear Non-Proliferation treaty towards global nuclear disarmament

• invest our resources in dealing with actual threats to our security, such as pandemics and climate change.

Background Information

Signed by the UK, the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) came into force in 1970 following widespread international concern about the risk of nuclear weapons proliferation and the increasing nuclear weapon stocks of those states that had developed them.

Our obligations under the treaty are clear; we do not have any right to possess nuclear weapons under the treaty, instead we are legally bound to disarm.

Commitment to upgrade and increase the UK’s nuclear arsenal is dangerous, irresponsible and costly. It is also irrelevant when dealing with the security problems we face today.

The government should not be spending billions of pounds of tax payers' money on militarily irrelevant weapons of mass destruction, when the real and imminent threats to our security – such as pandemics and climate change – couldn’t be more obvious. This is where our resources should be invested.
