Ask the Foreign Secretary to attend the TPNW States Parties Meeting

The First Meeting of States Parties to the UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) offers the UK government an opportunity to engage in the global nuclear disarmament process, and to honour its commitment to a world without nuclear weapons.

As the TPNW has now entered into force, ask the Foreign Secretary to participate in this momentous event which is a significant step in the fight for global nuclear abolition.

Dear Foreign Secretary, 
I am writing to you concerning the forthcoming First Meeting of States Parties to the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW), taking place in Vienna in June 2022, and to urge you to attend. Although the UK has not yet supported the Treaty, the UK can attend as an observer, as some other NATO states are doing.
This is a significant opportunity to engage with the treaty which entered into law on 22 January 2021.
With increasing support from the international community, the TPNW provides the first binding framework that prohibits nuclear weapons with the goal of their eventual total elimination. Attendance at the forthcoming Meeting would indicate that the UK government is seriously exploring ways to honour its long-held commitment to a world without nuclear weapons.
It is disappointing that the government has thus far rejected the TPNW as this goes against UK public opinion. National polling carried out by Survation in January 2021 shows that 59% of the UK public want the UK government to sign the treaty.
The government has previously stated that it believes the best way to make progress is through the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). I believe that the TPNW helps advance the goals of the NPT and supporting one does not weaken commitment to the other.
As Foreign Secretary you are responsible for our relations with other states and I believe that engaging constructively with states that are working to bring about an end to all nuclear weapons is of vital importance and in our national interest.
I hope you will participate in this dialogue and attend the States Parties meeting in Vienna in March 2022.
